What you're actually getting

This is Amazon's own-label microwave rice, Mexican style, 250g. Two minutes in the microwave and it's done. The flavour profile is mild tomato, a touch of paprika, maybe a whisper of cumin. Nothing aggressive. It's not going to replace a proper homemade rice dish, but honestly, it was never trying to.

I chucked one of these in at lunch alongside some leftover roast chicken I needed to use up. Spot on, actually. The texture was fine, not mushy, the seasoning did just enough to make plain chicken feel like a meal rather than a sad desk situation.

The price is the whole point here

At full price this would be unremarkable. But at around 43p once you apply the coupon and Subscribe & Save, it's a proper steal for a quick weekday lunch. The S&S commitment is worth flagging though: you'll need to remember to cancel or manage your subscription after, otherwise more pouches keep showing up.

Who this is genuinely for: students, office lunches, anyone doing light meal prep on a budget, people who just need something fast and not terrible.

Who it isn't for: anyone expecting bold, authentic Mexican flavour. It's subtle to a fault. If you want heat or depth, look elsewhere.

Any reservations?

Personally I'd say the portion size is on the smaller side for a hungry adult. Fine as a side, a bit lonely on its own. The packaging is also pretty basic, which is fine but worth knowing if you're comparing it to the Tilda or Uncle Ben's pouches that cost three times as much. At this price though, it's hard to complain with a straight face.
